Evolution: Two steps to upright walking
Uniquely human: No other animal has mastered bipedalism like we humans. Now, a study reveals for the first time how a crucial adaptation for this arose – our pelvis. Its unique shovel shape developed in two steps: The first is a 90-degree rotation and shortening of the ilium, the second a fundamental change in the ossification pattern of the iliac wing, as the team reports in "Nature." Only the combination of both enabled our ancestors to walk upright.
